AHS falls to 1-3 on the season with 71-36 loss to Kerens

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets could not get the shots to fall Tuesday night in a 71-36 non-district loss to the Kerens LadyCats.

With the loss, head coach Dee Evans Lady Hornets are 1-3 on the season with a road game Friday night at Jacksonville.

The action tips off with the junior varsity scheduled for 5 p.m. The varsity is scheduled to tip off around 6:15 p.m.

Kerens jumped out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter with an aggressive defense.

Kerens had 14 points from Taylor Ames in the first half as Ames had a fast break layup off an assist from Breanna Wells for the 12-2 lead.

Athens had only three baskets in the first eight minutes of play on a rebound basket by senior Cari Aguilera, a layup from Bryla Barker off an assist from Allison Kalawe and a putback from Barker for the 14-6 deficit with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Athens had two free throws each from Barker and Aguilera as Athens headed into the locker room down 31-10.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets were trying to find ways to score on Kerens but KHS continued to put the pressure on Athens.

The LadyCats pounded the ball inside to Wells — as she scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of play.

Ames also found ways to score onn Athens in the second half adding another 13 points to her total on fast break plays and from the three-point stripe.

Athens was led in scoring by Aguilera with 17 points and Barker with 14 points.

Shelby Sims had two points,, while Josee McNeece, Leah Lawrence and Hadley Cain had one point each.

In junior varsity action, Kerens defeated Athens 41-26 as Athens was led by Haley Adair with nine points and Aaylla Moore with six points.

The Lady Hornets will return home on Dec. 26 for a two-game homestand against Hallsville and Palestine Westwood.

The double header action for both games is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
