The Athens Hornets capped off Senior night with a big win over their District 15-3A rival Van Vandals with a 92-56 win at AHS Gymnasium.
With Mabank beating Canton 57-47 at Canton, the Athens Hornets claimed the third and final playoff seed.
Coach Gerald Anthony’s Hornets’ pulled off two big wins in the final week of the season to get themselves a fighting chance for the third seed and came out on a mission Tuesday night.
AHS (19-15, 6-4) jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter of as junior Anthony Sanders nailed a three pointer with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter for a 10-5 lead.
The Hornets would continue to put on the pressure against Van as Courtland Lyons capped off the opening quarter with two free-throws.
He then got a steal and fast break layup as the buzzer sounded to give them a 25-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Van (1-9 in district play) tried to battle back as Xavier Sherman drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to 25-14 but Athens went on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Senior Javonte Johnson drained a free throw and went up strong on a putback attempt to extend the lead to 28-14.
Courtland Lyons capped off the scoring run with a jumper of his own with 6:05 remaining to give them a 30-14 lead.
The Hornets took a 46-23 lead into the locker room and outscored Van 44-33 in the second half of play.
Antwon Chilton opened up the scoring for Athens in the second half off an assist by Sanders to extend the Hornets lead to 48-26.
AHS forced Van into 21 turnovers, compared to only nine miscues for the Hornets.
AHS had 12 players score in the contest.
They were led by Ryan Jefferson with 19, Sanders with 18 points and Chilton with 15 points.
Van was led in scoring by Carson Rucker with 14 points.
