Athens —
Northeastern Oklahoma A&M has turned to the football staff at Trinity Valley Community College for its next head coach.
NEO will announce TVCC offensive coordinator Sherard Poteete to fill the position created by the retirement of Dale Patterson.
The announcement will be made Tuesday at the school.
Patterson will remain at the college as athletic director.
Poteete is no stranger to the NEO campus in Miami, Okla.
He played quarterback for NEO under Patterson and on the Golden Norsemen’s Southwest Junior College Football Conference and Red River Bowl championship squad in 1998.
“This is a great thing for Sherard and his family,” TVCC athletic director and head football coach Brad Smiley said. “It’s a great opportunity for him to go back to a place he played and means a lot to him.”
“It is also a positive for our program that a school within our own conference sought one of our coaches to lead its football program. It shows the respect others have for our program.”
Smiley said he wasn’t sure who he would select as Poteete’s replacement, but nothing would change in terms of the Cardinals’ offensive philosophy.
Poteete joined the Cardinal staff in January of 2010.
He came to TVCC from Louisiana College, where he coached for six seasons and held titles of offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator, special teams coordinator and quarterbacks coach during his tenure.
Prior to attending NEO, where he earned all-conference honors at quarterback, Poteete enjoyed an all-state career at Union High School in Tulsa, Okla.
After NEO, he continued his playing career at Southern Illinois University, where he was named All-Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year.
“With this job, I am able to go back home. I played there and the athletic director was my coach when I played there,” Poteete said. “I am looking forward to take over as coach. I want to thank Coach Brad Smiley and the TVCC family for this opportunity.”
Poteete also played four seasons as a professional in the Arena Football League with franchises in Shreveport and Columbus, setting numerous records for passing, rushing and touchdowns.
Athens athletics director Paul Essary said Jamie Poteete — the head girls softball coach at Athens High School and Sherard’s wife — will remain with the school for the remainder of the year.
The couple has two sons Jamie have two sons — Kannon (7) and Parker (3).
