BRETT HOFFMAN: Legend Smith makes it 9 in a row

LAS VEGAS — Stace Smith of Athens is the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s 2012 Stock Contractor of the Year.

He has received the honor for the past nine seasons (2004-2012).

Smith, who provides stock for the annual MDA Benefit Rodeo in Athens, received the award on Dec. 5 at the 2012 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Awards Banquet in Las Vegas.

In July, Smith supplied the livestock and the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming, replacing Harry Vold who had produced the “Daddy of Em All” for many years. He also is the senior stock producer at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, a world renowned weekly summer show. He also has hauled his top bulls and broncs to this month’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Trevor Brazile watch

If he can snare two gold buckles at the 2012 National Finals in Las Vegas, Trevor Brazile will tie the PRCA record for the most world titles.

The record is 18, which is held by steer roper Guy Allen. Brazile, who lives in Decatur, has 16.

If Brazile clinches both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's all-around and team roping gold buckles during the Dec. 6-15 NFR, he will tie Allen. That would put him in position to break the record next year at either the National Finals Steer Roping or the NFR.

Brazile entered the 2012 NFR ranked No. 1 in both the all-around and team roping heading world title races, with a great opportunity to tie Allen. But when he recently was asked about reaching the milestone, Brazile said it hasn't been his biggest goal.

"I've reached my goals," Brazile said, referring to breaking Ty Murray's record of seven world all-around titles two years ago. "I'd like to get more titles just because I'm doing it and don't want to lose. But there's no real goals on the horizon."

However, when Brazile, who has nine world all-around titles, was asked more about the prestige of winning the most titles overall, he said: "I guess in the back of my mind that's probably out there."

Though Brazile acknowledged he would come away with a sense of high accomplishment, he didn't exhibit the same level of excitement than he had when he surpassed Murray.

"Oh, yeah, it would [be a great feeling]," Brazile said of the thought of surpassing Allen. "It's just another notch in the belt."

NCHA update

At the National Cutting Horse Association World Championship Futurity in Fort Worth, Nothing To Lose and rider Tate Bennett of Hereford have advanced to the Dec. 14 open division semifinals. The duo advanced a two-ride score of 438, which was the highest aggregate tally from the first two rounds. The finals is scheduled for Dec. 15 and the open division winner will receive $200,000.
