The Athens Review

LINDALE — The Athens Lady Hornets used an aggressive defensive attack and hit several shots at just the right time to beat the rival Brownsboro Bearettes, 57-45, Saturday at the Hoop Heaven Tournament.

The victory handed the Lady Hornets (4-5) third place in the tournament. Athens went 2-1 in tournament play.

Leah Lawrence led Athens with 17 points in the third-place game, while Demi Cumby added 14 points and three steals. Allison Kalawe finished with nine points, while Cari Aguilera and Bryla Barker once again cleaned up on the board. Aguilera scored seven points with eight rebounds and two steals, while Barker scored seven points with nine rebounds.

Athens head coach Dee Evans said the Lady Hornets wanted to come out aggressive on defense, but were called for six fouls during the first two minutes of the game. Even so, they came out in the second half on fire, outscoring the Bearettes in the third quarter, 22-8.

“The girls played good ball tonight,” Evans said. “We had a few girls step up and shoot from the outside, and Bryla stepped up and knocked her free throws down at the end when we needed them.”

The Lady Hornets and Bearettes could meet again this weekend when both teams will participate in Brownsboro’s annual Great East Texas Shootout.

Athens will open the tournament Thursday at 9:15 a.m. in the elementary school gym against Palestine Westwood. Brownsboro opens at 12:15 p.m. Thursday against Gilmer in the high school gym.
