HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Eustace finishes 3rd at state meet

Arambula earns all-state honors with bronze finish; freshman Gomez 31st for girls

ROUND ROCK — The Eustace cross country team has been to the Class 2A state meet three years in a row.

And they’ve set school records each of the last two trips — including Saturday.

The Eustace boys finished third in Class 2A — the best finish in school history after finishing a school-best fourth a year ago — and freshman runner Michelle Gomez was 31st at the state meet held at Old Settler Park on Saturday.

The conditions for the race proved to be challenging, with winds from 10-20 miles per hour with even stronger wind gusts.

After the dust settled, Gomez’s time of 13:06 left her in the top 35.

The boys team placed third in by finishing with 101 points. For the first time, the team participated in the awards ceremony and each member received bronze metals.

Running powerhouses Luling and Salado finished first and second, respectively.

Eustace was led by Evan Arambula, who placed third with a time of 16:13, receiving a bronze metal, individually. His finish earned him all-state honors and his time earned him “National Elite” status. With his time, he is also the 12th fastest runner in 2A state history.

Next was Mark Zimmerer, who placed 26th and ran a 17:29; Hunter Rose placed 30th and ran a 17:43; Jason Ballinger placed 50th and ran an 18:11; Preston Schwartz and Gavin Kirkhart placed 55th and 56th and ran 18:22 and 18:23; and Brandon Richardson placed 94th and ran a 20:19.

“This has been an awesome journey and they have all worked very hard,” Eustace cross country coach Josh Sypert said.

Kemp also had a runner at the state meet, with Jesus Perez finishing 32nd overall with a time of  17:44.67.
