FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Playoff-bound Malakoff falls to Winnsboro, 50-21

WINNSBORO — The Malakoff Tigers' bid to claim a share of the District 7-2A, Division 1 championship was rejected in convincing fashion Friday night, but it's still on to the postseason for Coach Jamie Driskell's squad.

The Tigers, who needed a win over the Red Raiders to forge a deadlock at the top of the district standings, lost to Winnsboro, 50-21. Even so, the Tigers will advance to the playoffs as the district's No. 2 seed and will face Redwater, the No. 3 seed in 8-2A.

The Malakoff-Redwater game is scheduled Friday at Gladewater. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Malakoff, 7-3 overall, finished tied with Eustace for the runner-up position behind Winnsboro (7-3, 6-0), but the Tigers dropped a 30-16 decision to the Bulldogs, which gave Coach Brian Herman's squad the edge for the No. 2 playoff position. Eustace was a 28-21 winner against Lone Oak Friday night.

The Tigers trailed 29-7 at halftime and could never get in the game.

Keonte Ross led the Malakoff effort.

Malakoff will be entering the playoffs next week for an unprecedented fourth straight year. In Driskell's four years at the helm of the Malakoff program, which was a combined 1-19 the two season before he arrived, the Tigers are are 33-11.
