HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Athens swept by Westwood

AHS falls by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-22 Friday night

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets came into Friday night’s non-district match against the Palestine Westwood Lady Panthers riding a three-match winning streak.

Unfortunately for coach Liz Ramsey’s team, the streak ended Friday night at AHS Gymnasium.

Westwood coach Janae Lock Evans Lady Panthers swept AHS in three games 25-14, 25-22 and 25-22.

With the loss, Athens dropped to 8-10 on the year, while Westwood improved to 21-8.

Athens had chances in game’s two and three to extend the match, but was unable to stop the Lady Panthers at the net.

In game two, Athens tied the game at 22-22 with a long rally, but Westwood took control with a kill by Natali Muniz and then junior Lacey Wooden put the game away with a strong service game. Wooden was able to serve an ace that gave them the win at 25-22.

In game three, Athens look to have the momentum as they had Westwood on its’ heels with service aces from Hannah Feinsod and two service aces from Sarah Red for the 4-1 lead.

Westwood then came storming back and took its’ first lead at 7-6 on a kill from MiKayla Benson off the assist from Neeli Hardison.

Athens was able to get to within one at, 9-8 on a kill by Red but the Lady Hornets were unable to get closer than that for the remainder of the match.

Westwood had strong play at the net from Benson, Diamond Dewberry, Hardison, Markeisha Durham and Courtney Stanhope — who all had kills in the game three win.

In the opening game of the match, Athens looked to start out strong behind the service game of Red with a 4-0 run that included two aces to give Athens the 5-1 lead.

Westwood was able to close to within, 6-5, as Wooden had an ace during a two point run. The lead would go back-and-forth until Dewberry put the Lady Panthers in the driver’s seat with a 5-0 service run that included an ace.

Westwood will open district play Tuesday night at home against Groveton with the freshman and junior varsity starting at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity.

Athens will look to get back in the win column as they return to the court on Friday, September 21 at Rusk.
