HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Brownsboro wins first game of season, 34-6 over Westwood

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears homecoming versus the Westwood Panthers was a test of rushing attacks. Brownsboro used three different tailbacks out of the “I” formation to overwhelm the Panthers 34-6 Friday at Brownsboro stadium.

“I felt like again after the first week, we made a lot of youthful mistakes. We were in the ballgame, so I was proud of our kids and I felt like we responded to those mistakes but it was just too much to overcome,” Westwood Head Coach Roger Mays said after the game.

Brownsboro started the scoring in the first quarter when Quintus Lee carried it over from 5 yards out, bringing the score to 7-0 with 5:59 left in the first quarter.

“We matched them one touchdown to one touchdown because we played hard but we let our emotions get the best of us and we didn’t handle situations very well. Our offense as a whole has to block better, not just one certain position but all across the board,” Mays said.

Brownsboro in the second quarter kicked it up a notch with three touchdowns on consecutive possessions.  The first score in the second was by Mitchell Penny who ran it in from 22 yards out to make score 14-0.

Westwood’s next possession was marred by a fumble by DJ Hicks and Brownsboro took over at Westwood’s 30 yard line. Six plays later, tailback Kodi White scored from 5 yards to make the score 21-0 with 4:40 left on the clock.

Westwood could not get anything going on its last possession before halftime and Brownsboro took over on its own 22-yard line.

Brownsboro took eight plays to bring it to pay dirt as Kodi White scored from 2 yards to make the halftime score 27-0. Brownsboro was able to get inside the Panther five yard line on a 43 yard completion from quarterback Jared Bragdon to Will Bailey to put the ball at the three yard line.

The Panthers came out of the locker room for the second half looking to try and make things close and put together a nine-play drive from their own 24 yard line to make the score 27-6.  Steve Green scored on a sweep from five yards and the extra point was blocked. Westwood’s drive was highlighted by a 52 yard run by Hicks in the middle of that drive.

The third quarter came to an end with Brownsboro leading 27-6.

The fourth quarter saw Brownsboro’s first possession lead to a touchdown when Kodi White finished the 52-yard drive with a one yard score. The extra point was good and the final score posted 34-6.

Brownsboro’s tailback tandem combined for 325 yards rushing with Quintus Lee getting the bulk of those yards with 162 yards on 21 carries.
