HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Staying in contention

AHS holds on to fourth place with win over Brownsboro

BROWNSBORO — When the Athens Lady Hornets needed to put the nail in the coffin against Brownsboro Tuesday night, they went to the serving of Hadley Cain.

The Lady Hornets defeated the Bearettes in four games by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 24-26 and 25-11.

With the win, the Lady Hornets are now 3-5 in District 15-3A play.

They finish out the regular season with a two-game home stand against Mabank and Canton.

Mabank and Canton are currently sitting in second and third place in district play behind the state-ranked Van Lady Vandals.

“A home stand is always good,” AHS coach Liz Ramsey said. “We are hit-and-miss at times when we play at home and it will be good to wrap things up at home. It is homecoming Friday for us but our No. 1 priority is volleyball. They will be really good games and we need to have fun.”

It was Game 4 where Cain put together a 14-point service run to close out the match following an 11-11 tie.

“It was very impressive,”  Ramsey said. “I got a little nervous about game three because we get a little shaky after we lose. I was happy when we tied the game back up and I told the girls that it is a 0-0 ball game now.”

During the service run by Cain, the Lady Hornets also had kills from senior Cari Aguilera and teammate Sarah Red.

The Lady Hornets had blocks from Aguilera and Hannah Feinsod during the run.

The first game was much like the fourth game as Athens jumped out to a huge lead at 20-7 behind three aces from Feinsod and two aces each from Elizabeth Hilliard and Krystal Davis.

Brownsboro (2-6) found a way to force the fourth game as Brittany Knippers gave the Bearettes a 24-19 lead.

But the Lady Hornets would not go away easy as Hilliard demolished the Bearettes lead and tied the game up at 24-24 on a kill by teammate Alexandria Gatlin.

A service error by Hilliard gave BHS a 25-24 lead and then Lexie Houston smashed an ace to end the game at 26-24.

The Bearettes were led by Madison Montgomery with two kills, one block, five digs and 10 assists. Knippers had four kills, 11 digs and an ace for Brownsboro.

In sub varsity action, the Brownsboro junior varsity defeated Athens 25-18 and 25-22, while the Bearette freshman won by scores of 26-24 and 25-22.

Brownsboro will wrap up the regular season hosting Van this Friday with the varsity starting at 4:30 p.m.

They will then travel to Mabank next Tuesday night for the season finale.
