The Athens subvarsity teams went 1-2 against Canton this week to open District 15-3A play.
In the junior varsity contest, Athens improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 with a 46-14 win.
In junior high action, the Athens ‘A’ team won 27-20, while the ‘B’ team lost 14-6.
Athens opened the contest with a big stop against Canton on the opening possession with a key stop on fourth and one to force a punt.
The Hornets put together a nice drive later in the opening quarter as they marched 80-yards on a 27-yard run by Osbaldo Juarez and a 41-yard pass from Brandon Boyd to Christian Chairez.
In the second quarter, Juarez scored on a five-yard run on the first play of the quarter. Jeremy Bateman scored on the two-point conversion for the Hornets.
After a punt by Canton, the Hornets marched down the field as Boyd had a 17-yard run, Bateman then added a 16-yard run and then added a seven-yard pass from Bateman to Chairez.
Juarez then scored his third touchdown of the game with a strong four-yard touchdown run.
Athens added another two-point conversion as Bateman found Chairez for the conversion.
After a kickoff recovery by the Hornets gave them good field position at the Eagles 32-yard line, Josh Sims scored on a nine-yard run. Bateman converted on the two-point conversion.
The Hornets had a touchdown by Boyd of eight yards and a touchdown pass of 12 yards from Boyd to Grant Hirsch.
In the final quarter, Jacob Knight capped off the Hornets scoring with a 27-yard run for the 46-14 finale.
The Hornets will host Van Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
Eighth grade splits against Canton
CANTON — The Hornets won their district opener against the Eagles 27-20 on Thursday night. The Hornets backfield of Braylon Woods, Kamion Tanner and Irvin Vazquez had big nights rushing.
Woods, Vazquez and Victor Dawson all scored rushing touchdowns and Miles Koehler caught a touchdown pass from Javiry Bowman.
Defensively Athens made big plays at key times.
Woods intercepted a pass as Canton was threatening late in the 3rd quarter and Jonathan Almaraz knocked a pass away from an Eagles' receiver with less than two minutes remaining in the 4th quarter to secure the ball game.
Javier Rodriguez was perfect on his three extra point attempts.
The Hornets play their next district game next Thursday in Van.
In the ‘B’ team contest, the Hornets lost a tough game to Canton 14-6.
Manuel Vazquez scored the Hornets touchdown and had a great night running the ball.
The Hornets were led defensively by Eliseo Padron who had 14 tackles including 5 tackles for losses.
Malakoff goes 2-1 against Lone Oak
The Malakoff Tigers junior varsity beat Lone Oak 57-6, while the eight grade won 36-0 and the seventh grade lost 16-8.
