JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Wrangling up a victory

TVCC looking to fix mistakes as they get ready to host Cisco College for Family Day

Athens — Head coach Brad Smiley has seen his TVCC Cardinals football team lose two of its games by less than 10 points this season.

He said coming into Saturday’s Family Day game against the Cisco Wranglers (0-2), he knows it will be another fight in Southwest Junior College conference play.

Kickoff at Bruce Field is set for 7 p.m.

“They (Cisco) have talent and good coaches,” Smiley said. “We have got to play well to win this week. We have to win the turnover battle, play great special teams and our defense has to keep pressure on the run.”

The Cardinals (1-2) secondary will need to keep an eye out on Wranglers wide receiver Jared Mapps — a 6’2” 200-pound sophomore — who averages 33.3 yards per catch this season.

Smiley said the Cardinals have been focused this week following a 24-19 loss to Kilgore in the conference opener last week.

Smiley said turnovers continue to haunt the Cardinals this season.

“Right now, we are minus 6 in the turnover battle,” Smiley said. “In the first game, the miscues were guys not carrying the ball correctly. In the second game it was interceptions and then in the third game we had two interceptions.”

In three games this season, TVCC sophomore quarterback Ryan Polite has thrown for 942-yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions to lead SWJCFC play.
