ATHENS —
The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals will open Southwest Junior College Football Conference play Saturday against winless Kilgore College at Bruce Field.
The Cardinals (2-0) are coming off a 27-13 win over Lon Morris last Saturday. The game was halted with a little more than two minutes left in the third quarter after the entire bank of lights on the south end of the field went out.
TVCC held a narrow 17-13 halftime lead before scoring 10 points in the third quarter. Saul Martinez had a pair of field goals from 25 and 44 yards out and quarterback Tucker Carter accounted for a pair of touchdowns. He ran for one from a yard away and later hit Cade Carter on a four-yard pass that, at the time, gave the Cardinals a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Rufus Mason also had a touchdown run for TVCC, which rushed 36 times for 169 yards. The Cardinals were also penalized 11 times for 105 yards.
Kilgore was never in the game during its season-opening 60-29 loss to Hutchinson Community College two weeks ago. But the Rangers fared much better last week, falling to Tyler by only three points, 34-31. Tyler’s Charleston Higginbotham blocked a 34-yard field goal with 55 seconds remaining to save the game for the Apaches.
Prior to that, Kilgore College had scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to get back into the game.
