HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: AHS wins non-district finale over Princeton, 7-1

Athens — The Athens Hornets wrapped up the non-district portion of its schedule with a 7-1 win over the Princeton Panthers on Friday at Hornet Field.

With the win, the Hornets are now 13-5-1 and will head to Canton tonight to take on the Eagles in the District 15-3A opener.

First pitch for the game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Hornets scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to take a 6-0 lead.

AHS picked up runs on a groundout by Travis Takata during the first inning and an RBI single by Josh Darden and a passed ball in the second inning.

Takata got the win for Athens with three strikeouts. He also gave up five hits over five shutout innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Darden came on in relief for the final two innings, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Jesse Taylor led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Garrett Conley was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Adam Stallings had a strong night for Athens going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Athens brought home one run in the fourth inning, and matched that run in the sixth.

In the fourth, Athens scored on an RBI single by Brandon Boyd, plating Conley.

The Hornets allowed Princeton to score a run in the top of the sixth inning by answering that run in the bottom of the inning.

Athens scored the run on an RBI double by Conley that scored Darden from third for their final run of the game.
