HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Stung by Jackets

AHS falls in 15-3A opener to Mineola, 7-1

Athens — The District 15-3A opener was tight for the first six innings until the Mineola Lady Jackets walked out of Peg Cain Field with a 7-1 win over the Athens Lady Hornets on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets find themselves on a two-game losing streak at 9-5-1 and 0-1 in district play.

They will look to break the streak on Friday night against the Brownsboro Bearettes in Brownsboro.

First pitch for the game is set to begin at 3 p.m.

Mineola broke open a 3-1 game in the sixth inning as they scored four runs off starter Bri Grogan and reliever Kristin House.

Mineola scored four runs in the seventh, due in large part to a three-run home run to right field off the bat of Jade Green, scoring Manda Wilmoth and Rikkilyn Hass.

Hass picked up the victory, as she allowed one run over seven innings. She struck out six, walked one and gave up six hits.

House took the loss for the Lady Hornets. She lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walked none, struck out none, and allowed one run.

Grogan went 6 1/3 innings giving up six runs on eight hits, with three walks. Three of the runs were earned.

Mineola was led at the plate by Wilmoth, Hass, Jade Green and Breanna McCalla — who combined for seven hits and five RBIs.

Athens had a chance to take the lead in the second inning but left two runners stranded.

Mineola never trailed after scoring two runs in the third on an error and an RBI single by Morgan Carton.

AHS was able to score their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Grogan.

Haley Durden scored the run from second after reaching base on an error.

Both teams had issues with baserunning as AHS had two baserunners tagged out, while Mineola also had two baserunners tagged out.

For the Lady Hornets, Sam Smith led the way going 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Grogan, Josee McNeece, Hadley Cain, and McKenzie Fowler each recorded a hit.
