AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens beats Mabank, 1-0, end four-game losing streak

Athens — The Athens Hornets beat the Mabank Panthers, 1-0, Friday night in Mabank.

The winning goal came off the foot of Ries Dunavan – who scored on a 20-yard strike off an assist from teammate Rene Nunez.

Goalie David Cedillo was credited with the shutout.

The Hornets (5-16-0) lost leading scorer Enrique Rodriguez for Senior Night after receiving two yellow cards in the game.

In junior varsity action, AHS picked up a 3-1 win over Mabank.

Scoring the goals for Athens were Tristian Chairez, Javier Vasquez and Juan Aguilar. Assists were credited to Keven Carrillo, Walt Mahmoud and Jesus Rosales.

Athens wraps up the season March 18 hosting the Chapel Hill Bulldogs. Junior varsity will start at 5:30 p.m.

Athens Lady Hornets falls to Mabank, 3-0

The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up Senior Night festivities with a 3-0 loss to district leading Mabank Lady Panthers Friday night at Bruce Field.

Mabank scored its goals at the 4:42, 12:34 and 63:25 marks of the contest.

The Lady Hornets (8-9-3) will wrap up the regular season March 18 against Chapel Hill. The junior varsity is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Two Lady Hornets named on all-district

Two Athens Lady Hornets were left off of the 15-3A all-district team that was released in last week’s paper.

Senior Josee McNeece and junior Hadley Cain were named to the honorable mention team.

4 Lady Tigers named to all-district team

Four Malakoff Lady Tigers were selected to the all-district team.

Kiana Reed was named to the first team, while Hayley Thomas and Hazel Puemple were named to the second team.

Plandreika Jackson was named honorable mention.

Those selected to the academic all-district team were Thomas, Sierra Perez, Puemple, Georgina Salazar and Jaynie Valero.

Sanders playing in all-star game

AHS senior Anthony Sanders will play in the 15th annual Texas Roundup All-Star game in Maypearl on Saturday.

Sanders will compete with 23 of the best players from Class A-3A from across the state of Texas.

Players are chosen from hundreds of nominations statewide.

The selection process is made by recruiters who worked as advisors for both teams.

The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. and admission to the game is $5.

Maypearl is located on FM 66 between Waxahachie and Hillsboro.

The 2013-14 Athens Daily Review All Henderson County girls basketball team will be released this Saturday in the Athens Daily Review.
