ATHENS —
The Athens Rangers finally ran out of gas Thursday night.
The Rangers, after beating the Cameron Orioles, 9-2, earlier Thursday, dropped a 9-6 decision to the Copperas Cove Reds in an elimination game at the Texas Teenage Baseball Senior Midget State Tournament at Coleman Park.
“It was a fun season,” said Rangers Coach Troy Scott, who was assisted by Tony Sikes and Michael Neill. “The kids did everything we asked them to do, they played hard and they didn’t give up. They have nothing to be ashamed of.”
The Rangers trailed the Orioles, 2-0, early before rallying for five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Kale Warren, Jake Lee (who got the win on the mound), Noah Sikes, Drake Grammer, Alec Scott, Cody Rayburn, Austin Neill and Keeton Brown had hits in the game.
In the nightcap, the Rangers and Reds were tied at 2-2 after the first on Sikes’ two-run triple. Scott’s second-inning single gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead, but the Reds charged back to take control of the game.
