Athens —
A double-digit lead after the first half of play Wednesday night looked to give the No. 1-ranked TVCC Lady Cardinals an easy win over the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners.
But in the second half, Angelina made the Lady Cardinals work to secure a 71-57 win on the newly dedicated Leon Spencer Court at Cardinal Gymnasium.
Coach Elena Lovato’s Lady Cards’ are now 27-1 on the season and 14-0 in Region XIV conference play.
This was the 42nd straight win for the Lady Cardinals on their home court, and they did it without the services of Shlonte’ Allen and Roddricka Patton. Allen and Patton were out with injuries.
This was also the 34th straight conference win for the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Cards looked to take control of the game early as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a three-pointer by Shannon Smith off an assist from Krystle Henderson.
But Angelina battled back as they were able to take their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Eliquq Brooks with 12 minutes remaining for the 12-11 advantage.
TVCC was able to put the pressure on the Lady Roadrunners later in the half as they went on a, 14-0, lead over a seven minute span to give them a 32-17 lead with 3:10 remaining in the half.
The connection of Henderson and Smith found each other once again as Smith drained a three-pointer with 1:45 remaining and Savannah Carter capped off the scoring with a nice reverse layup for a 37-21 advantage.
The second half looked to be a whole new ball-game as cut the lead under single digits on several occasions.
They were able to get as nine at 40-31 as Cekret Davis drained a three-pointer with 16:40 remaining in the half.
The Lady Cardinals would not give up as they pound the ball inside to Adut Bulgak and Julianne Anchling against the smaller Lady Roadrunners defense.
With 11:24 remaining in the game, Carter found Bulgak for the easy jumper to give TVCC a 52-40 lead.
Smith scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady Cardinals, while Bulgak had 15 and Henderson and Carter scored 11 points each.
TVCC will observe an off day this Saturday before closing out the regular season games on Feb. 27 hosting San Jackinto and March 2 hosting Blinn, who currently holds the second seed in conference play.
