AHS softball falls to 2-3 on the year following Brownsboro tourney

BROWNSBORO — The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up the Brownsboro tournament on Saturday at 1-3 losing in bracket play to Edgewood, 2-1.

For the season, coach Jamie Poteete's Lady Hornets' are now 2-3.

They played Elysian Field on Tuesday night in a varsity only contest.

“We are a very young team and didn't pull through at the plate as needed,” Poteete said. “We will continue to hit the cages in practice and improve as the season goes on.”

In their pool play games on Thursday, Athens lost to Kaufman 5-3, beat Edgewood 4-0 and lost to Commerce 2-0.

Athens returns to tournament action this weekend at the Malakoff varsity tournament.

Powerlifting

AHS girls finish fourth at Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL — The Athens' varsity girls powerlifting team competed Saturday at Chapel Hill.

Marisol Arciaga earned a gold medal lifting a total of 395 pounds.

Ingrid Castaneda won a silver with a total lift of 515 pounds.

CeCe Monmouth placed fourth with a total lift of 590 pounds, and Melissa Rodriguez placed fifth with a total lift of 510 pounds.

The girls team placed fourth as a team overall.

The team will travel to Fairfield this Thursday for it's next meet.

Basketball

Lady Cards to hold camp for kids Friday

The No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals are extending an invitation for youngsters to join them on the court.

A two-hour mini-camp with the Lady Cardinals is scheduled Friday at Leon Spencer Court at Cardinal Gym, starting at 6 p.m.

The camp is open to girls and boys in grades K-8.

The cost of the camp is $20 and registration is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Space for the fundamentals skill camp is limited.

LaPoynor 92, Elkhart 55

TYLER — The LaPoynor Flyers looked like a team ready for the playoff last Saturday during the East Texas Playoff Preview at UT-Tyler's Herrington Patriot Center.

LaPoynor jumped out to a 49-40 lead at the half and then dominated play in the second half.

The Flyers outscored Elkhart, 43-15, in the second half to cruise to the win.

Octavio's Crear led the way for LaPoynor with 23 points, six assists and five boards, while Deon Johnson had a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists.

Teammate Ashton Abendroth add 17 points and James Jackson had 10 points and eight boards in the win.

The Flyers shot 59-percent from the field and 57 percent from three point territory.
