Athens —
The Athens Hornets opened District 15-3A action with a 13-3 run-rule victory over the Canton Eagles Tuesday at Hornet Field.
With the win, head coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets evened their record at 9-9 heading into Friday night’s district contest at home against the Van Vandals. First pitch in the varsity game is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Vandals were defeated by Mineola in another run-rule game on Tuesday. Mabank beat Brownsboro, 4-3.
Morgan Gimler got the win for the Hornets, throwing a complete-game one-hitter. He struck out four and walked seven, and all three of Canton’s runs were unearned.
Jesse Taylor’s walk-off single scored Sawyer Roberson to clinch the run-rule win in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor’s was one of 15 Athens hits, and he finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and a sacrifice.
Adam Stallings led the Hornets with three hits — all doubles — and he knocked in three runs while scoring another. Morgan Gimler (2 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Travis Takata (2 for 4, RBI, triple, double, 2 runs) also had big nights at the plate.
The Hornets used an nine-run third inning to break open a 2-2 game.
Takata doubled to start the inning, and Stallings followed with his second double to drive in Takata and give Athens a 3-2 lead. Lance Funkhouser and Gabe Gross then singled, and Clint Sharp’s RBI groundout plated another run.
Every Hornet in the lineup got on base and scored by the end of the inning.
