REGION II-2A SEMIFINAL ROUND: Lions, Tigers ... Oh my!

Malakoff getting ready for powerful New Boston

MALAKOFF — The third round of the Class 2A playoffs could  bring an elusive mark for the Malakoff Tigers.

Winning 12 games in a season would be the Tigers first-ever time to do that and they are playing in their 13th game this season.

But the road to a 12th win will not be easy as they face the New Boston Lions.

“They have a good program going over there,” coach Jamie Driskell said. “They have a lot of speed that we have to corral. We have our hands full but I think if we play well New Boston will have their hands full.”

The Tigers (11-1) will take on the New Boston Lions (11-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Longview at Lobos Stadium. Tickets for the game are $7 for adults and $4 for students. MHS will be the visitors.

New Boston comes into the contest with a combined record of 23-2 in the past two seasons.

The Tigers are three-point underdogs in the Harris Ratings System this week after being favorites the first two rounds.

Driskell said a big key in this game is to see what kind of defense will show up with New Boston.

“You have to take what they give you,” Driskell said. “Sure, Damontes (Dowell) and Marcus (Dowell) will be in the mix since they will get their touches. We have to be able to adjust and do whatever we need to do to win the game.”

A few players that could be in the mix for the Lions are defensive back Jeff Gladney and Jawuan Johnson.

“They have a lot of talent and speed,” Driskell said. “I think it will hopefully be a good matchup.”

Note: Malakoff ISD will host a community wide send off on Friday from 1:30-to-1:45 p.m. at the high school. The send off will be held in the parking lot by the gym. KCKL 95.9 FM will be broadcasting the game Friday night.
