AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens wins opener over JT, 89-82

TYLER — The Athens Hornets opened up the 2013 basketball season with an 89-82 win over John Tyler Monday night.

Athens held a 34-32 lead at the intermission and a 58-49 lead after three quarters.

Leading the scoring was Anthony Sanders with 35 points, while teammates Ryan Jefferson added 29 points and Courtland Lyons pitched in 18 points.

BHS drops opener to Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE — The Brownsboro Bears could not get their offense going last Friday night in a 75-44 loss to Jacksonville.

The Indians jumped out to a 32-19 lead at the intermission and outscored Brownsboro, 43-20 in the second half of play.

Will Bailey led Brownsboro with 14 points, while Caleb Seale had seven points. Jared Bragdon added six points in the loss.

The Bears will look for its first win of the year Friday afternoon in the Texas Association of Basketball Officials tournament against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.

The game is set to be played at UT-Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.

Athens grad Romero named all-region

PARIS — Paris Junior College sophomore Jose Romero, a graduate of Athens High School, was recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association's All Region XIV Team for Division I men's soccer.

He was joined by teammate Ilmi Mehmeti, also a sophomore, among the seven total achieving the honor.
