INDOOR FUTSAL: Fast paced action

Indoor Futsal league gaining interest among soccer players of all ages at the Cain Center

Athens — A different style of indoor soccer known as Futsal has made it’s way to Athens and the Cain Center.

A partnership between the Cain Center and  Carlos Perez, organizer of the Indoor Futsal League, began about two months ago.

Currently the league has 14 teams in the men’s open and co-ed division’s that play on Monday and Wednesday night’s.

“This is a different style of the game being an indoor style of play,” Perez said. “It is something different for everybody to try it out.”

Perez is currently accepting registration for their next round of games.

Perez said you can contact the Cain Center or call him if you are interested in playing.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper.

The games consist of two twenty minute halves with a 15 minute intermission.

The difference between Futsal and soccer is the use of unlimited substitutions being permitted.

Players do not have to check in during a dead ball situation because they do not have any stoppage of play.

Players use a smaller ball that has less bounce since the players stay within the lines of the basketball court at the Cain Center gym.

“You work more on  your skills with the soccer ball then the outside game,” Perez said. “You get a lot more touches with the ball.”

Perez said one of the benefits of Futsal is a player of any skill level can take part in this fast paced action.

“This is for families and we wanted to have kids get out of the streets and play soccer into the night,” Perez said. “I wanted to see something for the whole community to be a part of. I want it to be open all year around and I want everyone to come and play.”

Another interesting rule in Futsal is no offsides call, which makes the game much faster and gives players a better chance to score on a break away attempt.

Perez said he hopes this game will catch on to more soccer players and kids across Henderson County.

“This is new for Athens and we wanted to start this and hopefully get kids and all different ages to be able to play this type of game,” Perez said.

For more information or questions about the league, you can call Perez at 903-293-8025.
