AHS swept by Pleasant Grove in 4-1 loss Saturday

MT. PLEASANT — Facing elimination on Saturday, the Athens Hornets (19-17) battled hard but came up short in the regional quarterfinals.

The defending state champion Pleasant Grove Hawks swept their second straight series with a 10-0 win on Friday and a 4-1 win on Saturday.

“Today was an adverse situation after we lost 10-0 last night and we had a chance today to beat them,” first-year coach Dallas Robertson said. “Their pitching was good and I am so proud of these kids. They committed since the beginning and I appreciate them for that.”

PGHS (23-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Athens starter Garrett Conley as Alex Alsup scored on an overthrow for the 1-0 lead.

Trey Jeans later ripped an RBI single scoring Ty Harp.

For the second straight game, the Athens pitcher’s were able to pick off runners at first as Conley caught Joe Pearlman at first with a perfect throw to Lance Funkhouser in the second inning.

The Hawks added another run in the third inning as six batters came up to bat during the inning.

The key hit during that stretch came from Dylan Silvey on an RBI bases loaded single scoring Alsup from first for the 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, sophomore Michael Canales came in to run for Morgan Gimler.

On the next at bat, freshman Brandon Boyd hit a bloop single that scored Canales from first for the Hornets lone run of the game.

Robertson gave credit to both players for their aggressive play.

“That was perfect with Canales getting in to pinch run and then Boyd puts it in play and played great during that situation,” Robertson said. “I was not worried about Brandon and he will be a good one here in the future for us.”

Boyd finished 2-for-2 in the game for the Hornets, while Conley, Gimler and Funkhouser had hits in the game.

Eight Athens seniors saw their season come to an end on Saturday in Gimler, Alex Smith, Gabe Gross, Sawyer Roberson, Kaleb Sifers, Clint Sharp, Michael Baker and Cody Jones.

“The seniors never complained and I knew it was going to be a good season,” Robertson said. “They are great leaders and great kids in the community and are some very special guys.”
