Emotions are high in Eustace following the hire of new athletic director and head football coach Heath Ragle.
Ragle makes the switch from assistant coach and defensive coordinator and is ready to get to work.
“Mr. (Stan) Sowers gave me a call around 12:15 a.m. and I was extremely excited,” Ragle said. “The kids were really hoping it was going to work out and get started today knowing who the new leader was going to be.”
EHS Superintendent Coy Holcombe said after 50 minutes of discussion, the decision to hire from within was obvious.
“He is well experienced and respected by the students in the class room and athletics,” Holcombe said. “He is well respected by his peers and his knowledge of the game it was a choice that we made to stay within.”
Ragle takes over a program that went 15-8 the past two season under coach Brian Herman — who is now at Lockhart — and Ragle gave Herman a lot of respect.
“Coach Herman had a great relationship with the kids and was an extremely good motivator with the kids,” Ragle said. “He taught me a lot as far as that goes and a lot about the hard nose running game of controlling the clock and he taught me all of that.”
Ragle said fans can expect the same offense next season in football.
“ ... You are going to see a Slot T, Wing T and we are going to run the football,” Ragle said. “It will be a run-style offense no doubt.
Ragle is married and has one son named Easton.
