FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Malakoff wins district title with 56-8 thumping of Winnsboro

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Tigers wrapped up the District 7-2A title with a 56-8 win over the Winnsboro Red Raiders on senior night at Tigers Stadium.

With the win, coach Jamie Driskell's Tigers finished out the regular season at 9-1 overall  and 5-1 in district play.

Winnsboro, under veteran coach Steve Pinnell, dropped to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in district play.

Malakoff will head into the playoffs as the No. 1-seed, while Winnsboro is the No. 2-seed. In other district action, Eustace defeated Lone Oak, 26-22 to wrap up the playoff seeding in district play.

The Tigers' relied on the running game of Damontes and Marcus Dowell in the first half as they combined for 168 of Malakoff's 206 yards of offense.

On Malakoff's opening drive of the game, the Tigers rushed the ball seven times as Damontes Dowell capped off the 61-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run straight up the middle for the 7-0 lead.

The Red Raiders then put together a 15-play, 75-yard drive on their next possession as quarterback Sheyan Thompson called his own number for the 1-yard touchdown plunge. He then converted the two-point attempt to give the Red Raiders a 8-7 lead with 9:10 remaining in the first half.

Following that score, the Tiger's then scored touchdowns on their next three possession's in the first half. Marcus Dowell scored two rushing touchdowns as he capped off a four-play drive with a one-yard touchdown on third and goal.

On their next drive, Marcus Dowell capped off a three-play, 31-yard drive with an 18-yard blast for the 21-8 lead with 4:44 remaining in the first half.

On their final drive of the first half, Malakoff backup quarterback Deric Greenhaw threw a perfectly placed pass to Braylon Cable for the 24-yard touchdown. Omar Gonzalez converted his fourth PAT good for the 28-8 lead with nine seconds remaining in the half.

In the second half, Malakoff continued to put the pressure on the Red Raiders with dominating play by the defensive line.

On the Tigers second drive of the second half, MHS once again went to the running game as Damontes and Marcus Dowell carried the ball four times for 34 yards. Marcus Dowell scored his third touchdown of the game on a 17-yard blast with 4:45 remaining in the quarter for the 35-8 lead.

After a six-play drive by Winnsboro, the Tigers once again put together a quick scoring drive as Damontes Dowell blasted his way for a 15-yard touchdown with 11:06 remaining in the game.

Following an interception by Malakoff's Jared Givens on the Winnsboro 32-yard line, Malakoff capped off a nine-play drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Greenhaw.

Jacob Woolverton then capped off the scoring for Malakoff with a 20-yard run with 3:09 remaining in the contest. Omar Gonzalez booted the PAT good for the 56-8 finale.

Damontes Dowell led the Tiger's offense with 19-carries for 178 yards, while Marcus had 57 yards rushing on eight carries.

The Tigers defense held Winnsboro to 196 yards of total offense.
