The Athens Lady Hornets opened up the 2013-14 basketball season with a 51-25 loss to the LaPoynor Lady Flyers Tuesday night at AHS Gymnasium.
With the loss, coach Dee Evans team is 0-1 and will look for its first win of the season Friday night against Kaufman.
The varsity only contest will begin at 5 p.m.
LaPoynor — under first-year coach Gary Grahn — relied on a strong defense against Athens and jumped out to a 14-1 lead in the first six minutes of play.
Athens was only able to get a free throw in the first quarter from Josee McNeece, a free throw from Bryla Barker and a jump shot from Allison Kalawe off an assist from Shelby Sims.
The Lady Hornets had only two field goals in the first half and shot seven-of-12 from the free throw line for a 27-11 deficit heading into the locker room.
AHS had three of their players coming into the lineup from volleyball season as Hadley Cain, McNeece and Cari Aguilera joined the team on Tuesday.
In the second half, LaPoynor’s Chelsea Negrete put the game out of reach scoring 13 of her 17 points to lead the Lady Flyers in scoring.
LaPoynor held a 38-17 lead after three quarters as Evans continued to find ways to break through the LaPoynor defensive effort.
The Lady Hornets committed 25 turnovers in the loss on Tuesday as LaPoynor pressed the Lady Hornets throughout the contest.
Athens was led in scoring by Bryla Barker and Aguilera with nine points each. Kalawe finished with four points and McNeece had three points.
In the junior varsity contest, LaPoynor won that contest by a score of 40-14.
Leading the Lady Hornets in scoring were Haley Adair and Asha Chitton with four points each.
The junior varsity will return to action on Nov. 15 at Rains High School. Tipoff for the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.
