The Athens Hornets junior varsity improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in district play with a 56-31 win over Mineola on Thursday.
The Hornets had three rushing touchdowns run from Osbaldo Juarez.
James Gideon had touchdown runs of 69 and 10 yards, along with touchdowns from Kevin Johnson (20-yards), Josh Sims (35-yards) and Jacob Knight (seven yards) in the contest.
Juarez had touchdowns of three, two and 65 yards in the first half.
In freshman action, the Hornets shutout Gilmer in a non-district contest by the score of 34-0.
Scoring for Athens were Zach Carson, Jacob Ickes, Juan Silva and Maalik Hall.
In middle school action, the Athens eighth grade teams split their games with the ‘A’ team losing 30-6, while the ‘B’ team won a defensive battle, 6-0.
In the ‘A’ team game, the Hornets scored their touchdown on a pass from Xavius Fulton to Gary Lyons in the second quarter.
Defensively Athens was led by Ethan Condon, Kamion Tanner, and Eliseo Padron.
In the ‘B’ team contest, Athens scored the game's only touchdown on a pass from Drake Grammar to Adrian Givens.
Defensive standouts were Jacob Moore, Will Perryman, and Alec Scott.
Both teams have one game remaining. They will play against Brownsboro at home next Thursday night.
In seventh grade action, the Hornets won both of their games as the ‘A’ team won 30-0, while the ‘B’ team won 12-8.
In ‘A’ team action, Athens recorded their first shut out of the season.
Coaches said the defense played a great game led by Trent Feagins and Jaquaylon Bowman.
Bowman had two interceptions, one was returned for a 60 yard touchdown.
The offense had three rushing touchdowns, led by Rhe'jhi Sherfield who had two touchdown runs.
Librado Arroyo was credited with one rushing touchdown.
Malakoff subvarsity sweep Quitman
MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Tigers’ subvarsity teams swept Quitman in district action Thursday night.
The junior varsity won by a score of 41-0, while the eighth grade team won 22-6 and the seventh grade won 20-0.
The Malakoff subvarsity teams will wrap up the season next Thursday with the district finale at Winnsboro.
The seventh grade will start action around 5 p.m. with the eighth grade and junior varsity to follow around 7 p.m.
