BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in District 15-3A play with a tough 40-12 loss to the Van Vandals Friday night at Bears Stadium.

The Vandals opened up the scoring on their first play from scrimmage as junior quarterback Peter Maddox found junior receiver Layton Myers streaking down the right sideline for a 65-yard touchdown in stride for the early 7-0 lead. Josef Ruiz booted the PAT good with 8:37 remaining in the opening stanza.

The duo of Maddox and Myers found each other again with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter as Myers found an opening on 2-and-18 for a 79-yard touchdown reception. Ruiz once again booted the PAT good.

Following back-to-back drives that ended in punts, the Bears put together their most efficient drive of the game as the duo of Mitchell Penny and Quintus Lee drove the ball down the field with eight straight carries for 58-yards. The drive was capped off with five straight running plays by Lee as he found the endzone from 22 yards out for the 14-6 deficit with 5:41 left in the first half.

The Bears found a way to hold junior running back Matt Savis in check for most of the game as he finished the night with only five carries for 34 yards. Savis scored his only touchdown of the game in the game with 1:36 remaining in the first half as he powered his way in from two-yards out. Ruiz booted his third PAT good for the 21-6 lead.

Van (2-6, 2-1 in district play) put the game away in the second half as they opened the third quarter with three straight passes from Maddox to Myers and Luke McGowan. Maddox then wrapped up the four-play, 62 yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Van's DeUndre Johnson then wrapped up the scoring for the Vandals with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 6:12 mark of the third quarter. He also had another 1-yard touchdown with 12 seconds remaining for the 40-6 lead.

Quintus Lee then had a highlight reel play as he took the ensuing kickoff on his own eight yard line. He found an opening down the left sideline for a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the 40-12 finale. The touchdown was the second career kickoff return for a touchdown for Lee.

Mitchell Penny led the Bears in rushing with 10 carries for 47 yards while Lee finished with eight carries for 25 yards. Will Bailey was the leading receiver for the Bears with four receptions for 41 yards.
