AREA SWIMMING: Representing her state

AHS sophomore Allison Hardin wins four bronze medals at National State Games in Hershey, Pa.

Athens — Athens High School sophomore Allison Hardin spent her summer doing something most students don’t do during their breaks.

She was winning swim medals at the National State games in Hershey, Pa.

She said her times in her four bronze medal events made her happy.

“They were better than normal,” Hardin said. “I had been training a lot during July and they got a lot better during that time of training.”

Hardin won medals in the 50-free at 25.81 seconds, the 100-free at 56.49 seconds and 2:05 for the 200-free along with a medley relay.

Hardin qualified for the games by placing top three at a regional meet in 2011-2012. She then placed in the top three at the State of Texas games.

She said coaches Clay Brock and Willy Roberson played a huge role in her performance.

“I think just trying your hardest and having a good coach is a big part of it all,” Hardin said. “I think the coach pushing me and doing diet type things helped play a role in my goals.”

The Athens area had seven swimmers qualify for the Texas Athletic Amateur Federation State Games as Jacob Elkins, Jamie Boyd, Lauren Takata, Hardin, Brock, Roberson and Summer Lawrence qualified.

Allison and Summer were the only ones who went to compete in Pennsylvania.

The Nations State Games had over 10,000 athletes in different athletic events during the week long competition.
