The Athens Review
The Athens Hornets' offensive reserves saw playing time for the better part of the fourth quarter Friday against the Rusk Eagles.
The defensive starters, however, never gave way. They had a little more work to do.
The Hornets recorded their second shutout in three games, this time victimizing the Rusk Eagles, 49-0. Athens has now outscored its opponents, 132-7, over the past three games. In doing so, Athens improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1996.
The Eagles had a miserable showing on a soggy night that saw their record drop to 1-2. They managed just 64 yards of total offense and had two snaps sail over punter Drew Dorsey's head for safeties.
Those plays, along with a 17-yard scramble for a fumble behind the line of scrimmage, cost the Eagles 77 yards. Rusk finished the night with 15 plays that were stopped behind the line of scrimmage and had five turnovers.
Wet conditions created a few hairy moments for the Hornets, too — they turned the ball over a season-high three times after entring the game with just one turnover in their first three games. But most of the turnovers came late, far after the game had been decided.
Athens sophomore fullback Logan Fuller had a monster night, rushing 22 times for 148 yards and five touchdowns. Fuller scored three touchdowns in the first half -- from four, three and six yards out -- to help the Hornets out to a 21-0 lead by halftime.
David Cedillo kicked a 25-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-0 early in the third quarter. Cedillo kicked six PATs, as well. Special teams were, well, special Friday night, with Ladarius Jordan setting up a pair of scoring drives with a kickoff return of 63 yards and a punt return of 31.
Anthony Sanders, the Hornets' senior quarterback, also got in on the action with a five-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter that made it 40-0.
