Athens —
AHS junior Enrique “Gordo” Rodriguez has joined a prestigious list after scoring his 30 career goal in a game against Chapel Hill earlier this year.
He has joined Jon David — the leading goal scorer for the Hornets with 48 — followed by Angel Chairez with 45 and Jose “Pepino” Romero with 44 goals scored on the all-time list.
“It was amazing when coach told me that I was the fourth one to score 30 goals during that game,” Rodriguez said. “They are some good players with Jon David and Pepino and Angel. They are all good players and I think I am one of them too.”
Head coach Jonathan Ryal said having this be the second player under his watch to do this was a special honor.
“It is special when you are one of four to do something,” Ryal said. “I am more happy for him than for me because this is my second one that has been under my watch. It is definitely a special thing with Pepino doing it last year and Enrique doing it this year.”
With Rodriguez being 14 goals away from third on the all-time list, Rodriguez said he is going to try his hardest to reach the goal.
“I will try my best to get all of those 14 goals so I can get second or third on the all-time list next year.”
Enrique found his way to the varsity last season and blossomed as a player after playing along side Romero as a forward.
“He came up last year and I put him up top with Pepino and he (Romero) was getting double teamed and he just exploded on the scene,” Ryal said.
Rodriguez was able to win the sophomore of the year award last year for the Hornets and Ryal said he has stepped up this year in a big way for the team.
“Last year, Enrique was sophomore of the year with 19 goals and this year a lot of coaches at the district meeting were telling me he probably wouldn’t get five goals this year,” Ryal said. “He has stepped up this year and he has a little more pressure this year.”
With the team at 2-6 overall in District 31-4A play and 6-11-5 overall, Rodriguez said the team needs to work harder with two games to go.
“They will get me the ball so I can take them on and shoot or give it back to them so they can shoot,” Rodriguez said. “I think we need to check to the ball so they can give it to me or I can give it back to them. We need to play smart the rest of the year.”
