FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Trinidad back in postseason after 55-6 thrashing of Karnack

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Trojans scored on their first six possessions on their way to rolling over the Karnack Indians Friday night, 55-6.

The game was called at the half according to the six-man 45-point mercy rule.

The win put the No. 11-ranked Trojans (7-3) back into the playoffs after missing out last year for the first time in 11 years. The Trojans are scheduled to play No. 2 Jonesboro at a date and site to be determined.

We basically have the same team, we lost just one player last year,” head coach Kevin Ray said. “They’ve just grown up a little bit, a year older usually makes the a little bit better. The young kids get more familiar with the system and get comfortable on the field, I think that’s what has turned it around for us.”

Friday night, the Trojans were led by junior Kevon Brookins-Dawson, who made the most of limited touches. Brookins-Dawson was handed the ball just four times, but turned that into 136 yards and four touchdowns.

When Brookins-Dawson wasn’t running through the Indians, senior Zach Spencer was. Spencer had three carries for 56 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned a punt 38 yards for a touchdown.

Trinidad’s other touchdown came when Ray called the number of his 365-pound, senior lineman. Jordan Dowell reminded folks of Chicago’s “Refrigerator” Perry when he lined up in the backfield and then rumbled for an 11-yard touchdown.

Karnack’s one score came on a 50-yard bomb from Shaquille Hicks to Kelvin Jackson in the second quarter.
