BRETT HOFFMAN: Alves rides into history

LAS VEGAS — Silvano Alves, a Brazilian who lives in Decatur, became the first cowboy in the PBR's 19-year history to clinch back-to-back world titles after competing at the association's World Finals.

Alves snared his second Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series world title after earning 12,201.25 points throughout 2012. Guilherme Marchi, the 2008 world champion, finished runner-up with 11,542.

L.J. Jenkins, a former Texcio, N.M., resident who lives in Porum, Okla., finished third with 10,621.25.

For the past 10 years, the association has awarded its world champion a $1 million bonus. Alves finished 2012 with $1,464,475, which pushed his PBR career earnings to $3,248,019.

In other title races at the Oct. 24-28 Las Vegas championships, Brazilian Robson Palermo became the first rider to win the World Finals average title three times, and also the first to win it in back-to-back seasons. Palermo finished seventh in the Ford Series 2012 world title race with 9,681.25 points.

Asteroid (owned by Circle T Ranch & Rodeo) won the World Champion Bull title with a two-out aggregate score of 93.25 points, beating defending champion Bushwacker (Julio Moreno/Richard Oliveira) by a quarter of a point.

College rodeo update

After competing in the Oct. 26-27 McNeese State Rodeo in Lake Charles, La., Trinity Valley Community College is ranked fifth in the men’s team title race in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southern Region.

After the first four rodeos of the season, Sam Houston’s men are ranked No. 1 with 1,673 points and Hill College is second with 1,575.5. No. 5 ranked TVCC has 1,029.

In the team roping heading standings, TVCC’s Lightening Nicolas Aguilera is ranked No. 1 in the regional standings. TVCC’s Kolby Ryan Miller is ranked first in the team roping heeling title race.

In the women’s team standings, Sam Houston State is in first place with 1,102.5 and Northeast Texas Community College is second with 598.

Cooper roping tough

Tuf Cooper of Decatur earned $33,800 after a day's work on Oct. 27 at the Roping Fiesta in San Angelo. The defending PRCA world tie-down roping champion pocketed $20,000 after winning the match roping title against eight-time world champion Cody Ohl. He also took in $13,800 after finishing second in the invitational ti-down roping competition.
