AREA BASKETBALL: Cross Roads Ladycats win Frankston consolation title

CROSS ROADS — The Cross Roads Ladycats won the consolation title of the Frankston tournament over the weekend.

Rebecca Kramer was named to the All-tournament team for Cross Roads.

The Ladycats (8-5) lost in the opening round to the John Tyler junior varsity, 33-30, on Thursday and lost to Cayuga 36-28 on Friday.

On Saturday, Cross Roads beat Arp, 31-18, in the consolation round.

In Saturday’s win, Kramer led the way for the Ladycats with a double-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals. Paulette Burgess had six points and nine rebounds, Kelsi Lookabaugh had four points and seven steals, Cynai Wilson had four points while Kourtney Hazelip added two points.

Also contributing in the win were Sara Spivey, Pepper Norwood, Cayla Penix and Avery Newman.

Cross Roads will play in the Central Heights tournament beginning on Thursday against Laneville at 11:10 a.m. and New Summerfield at 1:50 p.m.    

AHS improves to 7-0 on the season

The No. 23-ranked Athens Hornets picked up two big win at the Van Tournament this past weekend.

The Hornets defeated Chapel Hill 95-46 and Teague, 95-56 on Thursday.

Anthony Sanders lit up the scoreboard once again as he finished with 39 points, while teammate Ryan Jefferson had 18 points in the win over Chapel Hill.

In their win over Teague, Sanders had 23 points in their win, while Jefferson had 16 points and Courtland Lyons added 11 points and five assists.

The Hornets will be at home tonight against the Jacksonville Indians — who are 6-2 on the season. Tip off for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

AHS will wrap up the week at the Wills Point tournament.

AMS basketball wins games last week

The Athens middle school Hornets A teams were in action last Thursday night against Brook Hill and came away with two big wins.

The eighth grade Hornets put away a good Brook Hill squad by a score of 41-27.  The Hornets were led by Javiry Bowman's nine points.

In the seventh grade game, the Hornets came away with a 27-14 win over Brook Hill.  

Rhe'Jhi Sherifield led the Hornets with 11 points and Cameron Ray and Andrew McBride netted six points each to lead the Hornets to victory.

BHS splits games in tournament

VAN — The Brownsboro Bears split two games in the Van tournament this past weekend.

BHS lost to Douglass 45-35 and then beat Teague in their final game 50-30.

Against Douglass, Quentin Richardson led the way with nine points, while teammate Will Bailey added eight points.

Douglass held a 22-19 lead at the intermission and outscored BHS 23-16 in the season half.

In their final game of the tournament, BHS jumped out to a 26-11 lead at the break and never looked back.

Quentin McKenzie was the leading scorer with 13 points, while Bailey and Tamrick Pace added eight points each.

BHS returns to action tonight against Palestine Westwood at 7:30 p.m.
