HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: AHS baseball wins first two games of Palestine tournament

PALESTINE — The Athens Hornets jumped out to an early lead on Crockett and captured an 11-0 victory on Thursday at Palestine.

The game was decided in the first three innings as the Hornets scored all of their runs during that stretch.

An RBI single by Travis Takata, an RBI single by Adam Stallings, a groundout by Clint Sharp, an error, and an RBI single by Morgan Gimler opened up the scoring in the first inning.

An RBI double by Garrett Conley, an RBI double by Gabe Gross, and an RBI double by Takata in the second inning fueled the Hornets' offense early.

Takata racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Hornets.

Gimler shut down Crockett only giving up two hits, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five during his three innings of work.

Athens 5, Center 2

PALESTINE — In game 2 of the Howard Estes Memorial Tournament, the Hornets made the most of their six hits to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Hornets and Center both had scoring chances on Thursday, but it was the Hornets that were able to capitalize on them as they pulled out a 5-2 win at Palestine.

Center out-hit Hornets nine to six, but Center stranded eight runners on base.

Alex Smith shut down Center while he was on the hill. Smith gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three during his two innings of work.

The Hornets went up for good in the first, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by Sharp and a walk by Jesse Taylor.

The Hornets increased their lead with two runs in the second. A double by Gross ignited the offense, plating Smith. That was followed up by Takata's single, scoring Gross.

Two runs in the bottom of the second helped Center close its deficit to 4-2. A groundout by Jacob Mitchell and an RBI single by Cody Jones fueled Center's comeback.

Gage Ranes struck out to end the Center threat.

Brownsboro 6, Groesbeck 3

PALESTINE —Brownsboro pitcher Ryan Covington carried the Brownsboro Bears to a 6-3 victory over Groesbeck on Thursday in the opening round of the Palestine Tournament.

Covington racked up two RBIs on two hits. He singled in the sixth inning and tripled in the seventh inning.

Covington also had gave up one hit, with no earned runs, walked none and struck out three in two innings of work.

Tyler Thomison helped the Bears’ pull ahead for the duration in the seventh inning.

After Aaron Ramirez reached on an error, Thomison was able to reach scoring Ramirez.

Thomison got it done on the mound, allowing three runs over 2 2/3 innings.

He struck out four, walked two and surrendered two hits.
