ATHENS —
The Athens Hornets got a hat trick from Jose Romero and two more from Jose Martinez in a 10-2 win over the Kemp Yellowjackets in the District 31-4A opener for both teams Tuesday night at Bruce Field.
Seven different Hornets scored goals to help Athens improve to 5-5 on the season. Romero scored two in the first half and another in the second after missing nearly five full games with an ankle injury. Romero, a senior, was the team’s leading scorer last season.
“We got a lot of our younger kids playing time, and seeing our young kids makes me feel like we’re going to be OK in the future,” Athens head coach Jonathan Ryal said. Four junior varsity players saw action in the match, and Ryal singled out the play of defender Rolee Sloan and Efrain Hernandez — the latter of which got an assist on a perfect cross that was headed into the goal by Osiel Nieto in the first half.
Alex Cleto got Athens on the board inside the first three minutes of the match, beating a Kemp defender on a pass ahead from Eliseo Rodriguez.
Romero then netted his first goal on a penalty kick from point-blank range, making it 2-0 with a little less than nine minutes gone in the first half. He struck again three minutes later, making it 3-0 on a pass from Enrique Rodriguez.
Martinez then scored his first goal in unusual fashion, with Athens goal keeper Arturo Alvarado clearing a ball that went about 60 yards ahead. The ball landed in perfect position for Martinez to dribble another 10 yards before beating the keeper to make it 4-0.
Goals from Nieto, Alfredo Vazquez, Bryant Castaneda and Alexis Beltran followed.
Kemp got a goal in the first half from Patrick Renfro and another in the second half on a nice move to the goal by Matt Kinney.
