ATHENS —
As spring football winds down at Trinity Valley Community College, defensive coordinator Will Reed says he’s doing some hard evaluating of all his talent — specifically among his defensive backs.
Judging by the roster, Reed has plenty from which to choose — although each one could end up playing a role next fall.
“I told the guys going in (to spring camp) that all positions are open,” said Reed, who is entering the fourth season of his second stint at TVCC. “And right now those guys are battling on the back end like all the positions are open.”
A unit that relied heavily upon freshman and redshirt freshman last season has the potential to prop up the defensive backbone in 2011.
The Cardinals — who finished 6-5 last season and made it to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship game — are almost three deep at each spot in the secondary, Reed said.
That group should be led by sophomore cornerback Keivon Gamble, a transfer from SMU who finished tied for second in the conference with four interceptions and first in passes defended (18). Martez Shabazz is also slotted at right corner.
At the left corner, three sophomores are battling to get the coaches’ attention: Clifford Stokes, Dayvion Henry and Michael Johnson.
Chris Porter, who backed up Kenneth Pinkard at free safety last season and took over the job when Pinkard was injured, should have a leg up as he will be starting his fifth semester in the program. Dele Junaid, a midyear transfer from the University of Mississippi, and Josh Reed are also taking reps at the position.
At the rover position, Kent Ganious returns for his sophomore season after recovering two fumbles last season and returning one for a touchdown against Tyler. Reed said Raphael Hendrix and Montrae Williams, another midyear enrollee from Texas High, will figure into the mix.
