10/10 East Texas Fishing Report

NACOGDOCHES — ATHENS — Water level is 3.17 feet low and clear. Water temp is in the upper 70s.

Bobby Spearman at Lake Athens Marina says bass fishing has been good. Good numbers of slot fish hitting Carolina rigs. The fish are grouped in 5-8 feet of water in the backs of sloughs. A few fish reported on topwaters early.

Bream fishing has been excellent using crickets around stumps in 10-12 feet of water. Crappie are slow.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level 2.69 feet low and stained. Water temp is in mid-70s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says black bass are good around docks using spinnerbaits, Rat-L-Traps and plastics flipped to pilings. Crappie are showing up around brush piles in 7-8 feet of water around brush piles. Also some fish around bridge pilings and deeper brush in 12-18 feet.

Best report on catfish are coming from jug liners and noodlers. Cut shad is working best. Rod and reelers are picking up blues and channels using live bait, cut shad and shrimp. White bass and hybrids are schooling over points and humps in 8-14 feet of water. Best bite is at night around lighted docks using Roadrunners and Rat-L-Traps.

PALESTINE — Water level is 1.22 feet low fairly clear. Water temp in the mid-70s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says bass are good to 9 pounds on wacky worms in 2-5 feet of water around brush. Several other solid fish reported.

Blue cat are good to 50 pounds on jugs tipped with live perch. Rod and reelers are picking up some good blues and channels in skinny water using punch bait, night crawlers and liver.

Crappie are slow. A few good reports coming from the Highway 155 bridge in 19-22 feet of water. Jigs and minnows are producing equally well.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — RC is 3.26 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the low 70s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says bass fishing has been good to four pounds using spinnerbaits and topwaters around shallow weedbeds and hydrilla in 2-4 feet of water. Several anglers are reporting a decent topwater bite all day.

Crappie are good in 15-20 feet of water, suspended at 6-10 feet in standing timber. Minnows are the ticket. Catfish are good under cormorant roosts early in the day. Midday bite is best on windy banks and over baited holes in standing timber 10-15 feet deep.

White bass are fair trolling cranks or throwing slabs in 15-20 feet of water on points. Anglers are having to cover a lot of water to box a limit.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level is 2.40 feet low and stained to clear. Water temp in the mid-to-upper 70s.

Bass are good to four pounds with decent numbers reported. Best bite is around shallow grass using crankbaits, Chatterbaits, Rat-L-Traps and whacky worms. Texas rigs are producing a some fish in 8-15 feet water in the mouths of the creeks.

Crappie are hit and miss around deep brush using shiners and jigs.

FORK — Water level is 3.80 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the low-to-mid-70s.

Fishing guide Gary Paris says bass fishing has been tough. A few small fish hitting topwaters and shallow cranks around shallow grass in 2-5 feet of water. Out deeper, Carolina rigs and drop shots are producing a few bites in 15-20 feet of water.

Crappie are hitting shiners and jigs around brush piles in 20 feet water, suspended at 15 feet. Catfish are good in 20-25 feet of water over baited holes.

NACONICHE — Water level is at full pool and clear. Water temp in the low-to-mid-70s.

Bass fishermen are reporting mixed results using plastics jigs around outside grass lines in 10-15 feet water. A few fish in the 4-6 pound range reported. Topwaters are producing a few blow-ups under cloudy skies and early and the day.

Crappie fishermen are picking up partial limits using jigs and shiners around grass beds and at the highway bridge crossing. Lots of short fish reported.

TOLEDO BEND — Water level is 2.91 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the low-to-mid-70s.

Charlie Shively at Bill's Landing says all fishing has been good. Crappie are grouped along the edge of the Sabine River in 12-16 feet of water, suspended at 9-12 feet. Jigs and minnows are producing equally well.

Catfish are excellent. Flatheads and blues to 60 pounds reported on trotlines tipped with live perch. Best sets are in the timber, 10-14 feet deep. Rod and reelers reporting good numbers of blue and channels using worms and shad fished on bottom and under a cork eight feet of water. Black bass are good up north using frogs, Texas rigs, spinnerbaits and cranks worked around shallow weedbeds.

SAM RAYBURN — Water level is 3.15 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the low-to-mid-70s.

Ann Wilson at Ann's Tackle says bass fishing has been good. Lot of quality bass up 10 pounds hanging around shallow cover in  2-5 feet, hitting Senkos, Yellow Magics, Hunch Backs and light Texas rigs. Out deeper jigs and spoons have been effective. Balls of shad beginning to show up in the mouths of the coves. The FLW Outdoors Open daily weigh-in will be held Friday at the Cassels Boykin park, moving to Wal-Mart in Lufkin on Saturday and Sunday.

Crappie anglers are reporting limits around brush piles using minnows and small grubs.

PINKSTON — Lake Pinkston is about 18 inches low and stained. Water temp in the low-to-mid-70s.

Fishing guide Alan Spruiell says fishing traffic has been fairly light since the beginning of squirrel and bow season. Bass are schooling on the main lake, hitting topwaters and spoons. Some solid fish also reported on jigs fished along outside grass edges.

Crappie are hitting shiners around brush piles, suspended 10 feet deep in 20 feet of water.
