HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Still a fighting chance

AHS can still get in the playing after beating Whitehouse 2-1 with two games left

Athens — The Athens Hornets gave themselves a fighting chance to make it to the Class 4A state playoffs following a 2-1 win over the Whitehouse Wildcats.

With the win, the Hornets are now 6-11-5 overall and 2-6 in district play.

With the win, the Hornets are now tied with the Mabank Panthers and the Chapel Hill Bulldogs at six points each in the standings.

The Hornets wrap up the regular season next week hosting the Mabank Panthers next Tuesday night for Senior night and then on the road at Chapel Hill to wrap up the regular season.

Both of those games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. following the junior varsity games set for 5:30 p.m.

Whitehouse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the nine minute mark of the first half.

The Wildcats Caleb Balderrama blasted a shot past Hornet’s goalkeeper Johnny Gonzalez off an assist from Destin Williams for the 1-0 lead.

The Hornets would not go down without a fight as Bryant Castaneda scored the equalizer with 20 minutes remaining in the contest.

With the Hornets pushing the tempo early in the second half, Jordy Castaneda blasted a shot that bounced off Whitehouse goalkeeper Patrick Ray.

Bryant Castaneda was in the right place and found a crease to get the ball past the goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie.

With 11:16 left in the game, Alfredo Vasquez gave the Hornets the lead with a blast past Ray off an assist for the 2-1 lead.

Tempers started to flare late between the two teams due to the uptempo style that both teams were showing on the field.

With just over three minutes remaining in the contest, Wildcat forward Travis Blackburn had a penalty kick against Gonzalez but the shot went wide right as Athens was able to preserve the lead at 2-1.

With just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Wildcats had a chance to tie the game up themselves off a free kick, but Travis Blackburn was called for being offsides as the ball went into the back of the goal on the rebound attempt.

The Wildcats had one final attempt to tie the game up at 2-2 but a shot by Destin Wilkins went wide of the goal as time expired.

With the loss, the Wildcats are now 3-3-2 in district play.

In the junior varsity game, the Athens Hornets finished with a 1-1 tie against Whitehouse.

In their game against Lindale last Friday, the Hornets lost that game 5-0 in Lindale.
