HIGH SCHOOL TRACK: Three time medalist

CRISD’s Alexander wins a gold and two bronze medals in three trips to state track and field meet

CROSS ROADS — Making it to the state track and field meet three straight years is a special feat.

For senior Natalee Alexander, she has recorded three medals during that stretch.

She was a state champion her sophomore year and won bronze medals the past two years.

“Going to state for Cross Roads — being a small 1A — is not very often that it happens,” Alexander said. “I think the last time it happened was in the 80’s or 90’s. Being the first one since that long ago was pretty special for me. Also being able to make it for three straight years made it that much more special.”

Track coach Eddie Ervin said her maturity level was huge this year.

“She was not as nervous as some of the other girls’ that were jumping,” Ervin said. “There were some other girls that were jumping the same height that she was jumping and she was able to fight through that.”

Alexander finished third this year with a high jump of 5-5 and said it was not her best jump.

“This year in Austin, I had a little problem jumping,” Alexander said. “I think it was due more to injury and  I have worked out and practiced all year. The past two weeks I trained as hard as I could doing off season workouts and running and making sure that I was good to go for the state track meet.”

She said she was disappointed with her finish.

“ ... Being able to medal is a good thing,” Alexander said. “You can’t complain and getting top three in the state of Texas is hard to do.”

Alexander said she is considering Angelo State or Texas A&M-Commerce to run track in the fall.
