AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Three Mabank seniors named academic all-state

MABANK — Three Mabank Lady Panthers basketball players were named to two academic all-state list recently.

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches have named Morgen Gaona and Kourtney and Kaitlyn Holyfield to their list.

Qualifications for the team were listed as each player must be a graduating senior and have a 92.0 GPA.

Kaitlyn and Kourtney Holyfield were also named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Academic all-state team.

Cross Roads golf tournament set

CROSS ROADS — The Cross Roads Senior Last Blast golf tournament is scheduled for Sunday, May 19 at Twin Lakes Country Club.

The event is a four person shotgun scramble starting at noon. Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m. or you can pre-register for the event.

The cost is $300 per team with no members under the age of 16.

Organizers are also asking for people to be a hole sponsor for $75, or a tee sponsor for $50.

There will be raffles and door prizes, food, CD's of pictures during the tournament, goody bags and split the pot winners.

Arambula headed to state track meet

EUSTACE — Eustace trackster Evan Arambula has advanced to the state track and field meet in Austin this weekend.

Arambula qualified for state in both the 3200 meter run and the 1600 meter run.

He will run at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the UT-Austin campus  May 11 and 12.

He finished first in the 3200 with a new school record time of 9:32.33.

He finished second in the 1600 meters by one one hundreth of a second but also reset the school record in a time of 4:22.44.

Trinidad’s Jordan Dowell advanced to state in the shot put.
