AHS wraps up non-district schedule with a 12-11 victory over Bullard

Athens — The Athens Hornets wrapped up non-district play with some major momentum on their side in a big win over Bullard Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.

With the game tied at 11-11 in the bottom of the seventh, AHS found a way to load the bases off reliever Trevor Rumbelow.

Hornets first baseman Lance Funkhouser jumped on the first pitch with the bases loaded in between second and third driving in Allen Jones from third for the game-winning RBI.

The Hornets opened up the bottom of the inning down 11-9 following a two-out triple by Haden Bryant off of reliever Travis Takata.

On the play, Bryant blasted the ball over the left-fielder’s head and drove in Weston Gray and J.P. Hendrix for the lead.

Early on in the game, both teams went back-and-forth in terms of scoring runs off Athens starter Josh Darden and Bullard starter Britt Thomas.

Bullard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Holden Bryant reached base on a single.

Following a strikeout by Hendrix, Haden Bryant drove in Holden Bryant with a double.

Haden Bryant then scored on a fielder’s choice by Trevor Rumbelow for the 2-0 lead.

The Hornets would capitalize in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs as Morgan Gimler and Takata reached on back-to-back singles.

Gabe Gross drove in Gimler later in the inning followed by a bases clearing singe from Clint Sharp for a 3-2 lead.

Holden Bryant then tied the game at 3-3 in the second inning scoring Connor Mebane.

The Panthers regained the lead in the top of the third inning off Darden as catcher Trevor Rumbelow reached on a double.

With a 1-0 count to Jacob Provencher, he blasted a standup double scoring courtesy runner Jakob Skelton for the 4-3 lead.

The Hornets returned the favor once again in the bottom of the inning as Funkhouser reached on a double.

Following a single by Gross, Clint Sharp hit an RBI-single on a 1-1 count scoring Funkhouser from second for the 4-4 tie.

Bullard held a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning before Athens scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead into the top of the sixth inning.

During the fifth, Adam Stallings came in to bat for Daniel Mossberger and hit a one-out bases clearing single scoring Sharp and Taylor.

Bullard found a way to tie the game up again in the sixth inning on a bases clearing single from Provencher scoring Haden Bryant and Rumbelow.

Funkhouser led the way for the Hornets going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sharp finished 4-for-4 with four RBI’s and one run scored, while Gross went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Takata picked up the win in relief going three innings while allowing five runs — two earned with two strikeouts and one walk.

AHS opens District 15-3A play tonight hosting the  Canton Eagles at 6:30 p.m.
