AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: 8 Bobcats baseball players receive all-district honors

CROSS ROADS — The District 19-A baseball all-district team was announced this week and eight Cross Roads Bobcats made the list.

Junior Nick Cobb was named a first team pitcher, senior Shawn Himes a first team infielder and sophomore Trey Hazelip a first team utility player.

On the second team was freshman catcher Tristan Matheney and senior designated hitter Luke Leverett.

Receiving honorable mention honors were freshman Will Van Deusen, teammate Garrett McCurley and Brent Pryor.

AHS camps start June 11-13

Athens ISD has set three camps for this summer according to athletic director Paul Essary.

The 2013 edition of the Athens Hornets football camp is scheduled for July 23-25 at Bruce Field. There are two sessions with the first through six grade having their camp from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

The seventh through ninth grade camp will run from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The camp will be hosted by Essary and the Athens Hornets football staff. Cost of the camp is $50 and all campers will receive a camp t-shirt.

The Athens Lady Hornets will host a volleyball and basketball camp on June 11-13 at the Athens ISD gymnasium.

The camp is for girls entering the third through nine grade.

The purpose of the camps is to help athletes with the fundamentals of volleyball and basketball with emphasis in key areas.

Attention will be given to team involvement, enthusiasm, motivation, discipline and self-confidence.

Registration and check-in will be held on June 11 from 8-to-9 a.m. for a cost of $30 per participant.

You are asked to return the application  for correct t-shirt size and the fee to reserve a place in the camp.

Softball tournament  set for June 8

A benefit softball tournament is set for June 8 for a local teenager named Johnathan Stovall.

Stovall is a 19-year old who has been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma cancer.

The tournament is set for the Cain Center ball fields with a start time of 9 a.m. with no deadline for registration.

The cost is $150 per team with a double elimination format.

Donations are also welcome for Stovall.

Stovall will be going to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa for treatment.
