AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens improves to 3-0 with 71-50 win over Pine Tree

LONGVIEW — The Athens Hornets improved to 3-0 on the year with a 71-50 win over Longview Pine Tree Monday night.

Ryan Jefferson had a double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assist, Anthony Sanders had 21 points, five steals and five assists and Courtland Lyons added 11 points.

The Hornets are set to play in the Van Invitational Tournament this weekend.

AMS teams split with Mineola

The Athens middle school Hornets split games with the Mineola Yellowjackets Monday evening.

The eighth grade A and seventh grade B team’s picked up victories.

The eighth grade A team’s won, 57-35.  

Coaches said the Hornets played great pressure defense throughout the game.  

AMS was led by Miles Koehler with 15 points, Javiry Bowman with 13 and Gary Lyons with 12.

In the B team game, the Hornets lost 24-9. The Hornets were led by Victor Dawson, Justin Gatlin, Jordan Mayhall and Austin McNeese.

In seventh grade action, the Hornets A team lost to Mineola 29-20.

Athens was led in scoring by Rhe'jhi Sherfield with six points and Cameron Ray with five points.

Andrew McBride led the Hornets defensively and in rebounding.

The Athens seventh grade B team won 21-11.

Coaches said the Hornets played a great defensive game  and did not allow any points in the second and third quarter.

Leading scorers were Marquis Henderson with six points and Jaylon Brooks with five. Na'keldrick Cumby and Daniel Torres both had four points.

Lookabaugh named to All-HC team

Cross Roads volleyball player Kelsi Lookabaugh was left off of the 2013 Athens Review All-Henderson County volleyball team.

Lookabaugh was the team's setter and was a first-team all-district member. She averaged 23 assists a game and had a 99-percent serving average.

Lookabaugh was named honorable mention on the All-Henderson County team.

HOT bowl tickets on sale at TVCC

Ticket sales for the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl are on sale at Trinity Valley Community College.

The Southwest Junior College Football Conference and regional champion Cardinals are scheduled to face the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove on Saturday, Dec. 7. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.

The Cardinals are ranked sixth nationally and are 9-2 on the season. The Thunderbirds are ranked No. 12 and are 8-2.

The college has received an allotment of 200 general admission (35-yard line to end zone) and 50 reserve (inside the 35-yard lines) tickets for presale. General admission tickets are $8 and reserve tickets are $18. At the gate, tickets will be $10 and $20.

TVCC athletic director/head football coach Brad Smiley said all advance ticket sales benefit the college.

Tickets can be purchased at the TVCC field house. Cash and checks will be accepted.

Playoff action set for Bruce Field on Friday

The Tenaha Tigers and the Bremond Tigers will clash Friday night at Bruce Field in a Region III-A, Division II regional quarterfinal matchup.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. It will mark the second time this season Bruce Field has hosted a playoff game. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

Tenaha is 10-1 and coming up a 28-14 win over Chilton last week. Bremond improved to 12-0 with a 28-7 win over Lovelady.

The Harris Ratings System has installed Tenaha as an 11-point favorite.
