JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: TVCC to ‘Play 4 Kay’ on Wednesday

ATHENS — Trinity Valley Community College is again teaming up with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

For a fifth straight year, TVCC is participating in the WBCA’s Play 4Kay initiative, which began as “Think Pink” in 2007. TVCC has designated the Wednesday, Feb. 8  game against Blinn College at Cardinal Gym as its Play 4Kay event. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

The initiative is named in memory of former North Carolina State head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow, who died after a third recurrence of breast cancer in January of 2009. The movement continues to grow and change lives, especially during February.

Yow recorded 737 victories during her coaching career while also guiding the United States Women’s Basketball team to the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In June of 2002, Yow’s  accomplishments earned her induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and in July of 2007. Yow was presented with the inaugural Jimmy V. ESPY Award for Perseverance.

That first year, 120 schools participated. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.

The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations and saw more than 56 schools break attendance records at their event. In 2010, over 1,800 participants came together to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached more than 922,000 fans across the nation. Over 22 schools broke attendance records through their participation. Last year saw more than 1,300 teams and individuals participate and donations totaled more than $650,000.

Overall, the WBCA Play 4Kay has raised nearly $4 million, has reached almost three million fans, and has unified over 6,000 participants in only five years.

All fans wearing a pink shirt to the game will be admitted free and all cancer survivors will be recognized at halftime. Cancer survivors planning to attend the game are asked to contact TVCC athletic coordinator Lucy Strom at 903-675-6359 or lstrom@tvcc.edu.

Donations will also be made to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which is the association’s charity of choice.

Lady Cardinal basketball players and Cardinal cheerleaders will participate by wearing pink t-shirts. The Lady Cardinals will don the pink t-shirts during warm-ups and the cheerleaders will wear pink throughout the game.

The Cardinals will also be at home against Blinn College at 7:30 p.m.

For fans unable to attend the games, both will be webcast at www.tvcc.edu.
