HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Mabank ousted in quarterfinal round to Pleasant Grove 60-42

HALLSVILLE — The Mabank Panthers found themselves in a 31-19 hole at the intermission during their Class 3A, Region II quarterfinal and lost 60-42 to the Pleasant Grove Hawks Tuesday night.

First-year coach Tracy Carter’s Panthers’ end the season with a record of 25-10.

“Along with our coaching staff I am very proud and happy for our team, they very coachable kids that played extremely hard all season,” Carter said. “They represented the school and community very well.   It was a fun post-season, we appreciated all the support along the way.”

Carter said the Panthers could not get into an offensive rhythm due to an aggressive zone defense by Pleasant Grove.

The Panthers were led in scoring by David Marler with 16 points, while teammate Garrett Graham scored eight points and Landon Marshall added six  points.

Pleasant Grove was led in scoring by Dustin Thomas with 18 points.

“We held Dustin Thomas (a very talented player) to 3 buckets the whole game, but he hit 11 or 13 free throws,” Carter said.

Mabank 4, Whitehouse 1

MABANK — The Mabank Lady Panthers scored a huge win over the Whitehouse LadyCats at Panther Stadium Tuesday night.

Savannah Henderson scored all four goals for the Lady Panthers behind assists from Vivian Duong and Kacie Williams.

The Lady Panthers end the first round of district play with a record of 4-1 and an overall record of 14-2-2.

They will start the second round of district against the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs on Friday at 4:30 at Panther Stadium.  

Athens 3, Chapel Hill 0

Athens broke a five game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over the Chapel Hill Bulldogs’ in District 31-4A action.

Alfredo Vasquez scored two goals, while Enrique Rodriguez scored his 30th career goal.

Johnny Gonzalez recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win.

Rodriguez, Osiel Nieto and Bryant Casteneda had the assists for the Hornets.

AHS (5-9-5, 1-4) begins the second round of district play hosting John Tyler Friday night.

Varsity action starts at 7 p.m.

Baseball

AHS finishes 2-1 at Palestine tourney

PALESTINE — The Athens Hornets picked up two big wins in the Palestine tournament last weekend.

AHS beat Groesbeck 10-8 in their first game on Friday and beat Palestine 11-2 in the final game of the day.

On Saturday, the Hornets lost to Elkhart 1-0.

In their opening game, Athens scored in every inning but the first for the win.

Adam Stallings went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and Jessie Taylor went 2-for-2.

In game 2, AHS wrapped up the game in four innings.

Clint Harp went 2-for-3 with four RBI’s and two runs scored for the Hornets.

Travis Takata went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Stallings pitched a complete game three hitter with six strikeouts.

In game 3, Morgan Gimler took the loss giving up one run on three hits. The run was earned.
