WILLS POINT VARSITY BOYS BAKSETBALL TOURNAMENT: Hornets take title
Athens beats Wills Point for crown, 70-47
WILLS POINT — The Athens Hornets are on a roll.
Now they’ve got a nice piece of hardware to show for it.
The Hornets won four straight games to win the Wills Point varsity boys basketball tournament this past weekend. Head Coach Tracy Carter’s club grabbed the championship trophy with a 70-47 win over the host Wills Point Tigers.
“Our defensive intensity was great from start to finish and that was the key,” said Carter, whose team improved to 9-3. “The tournament had some really good teams, and I am very happy for our kids to win it.”
Kendall Sanders and Nick Monmouth were named to the All-Tournament Team. Sanders averaged just under 17 points per game in the tournament, while Monmouth scored in double figures twice and hit a game-tying three-pointer in the Hornets’ 47-43 win over Forney.
Athens also had wins over Sulphur Springs (87-60) and Edgewood (55-47).
Sanders finished with 16 points against Wills Point. Monmouth had 14 and Desmond Bowie also finished in double figures with 10. Jared Tilley and Devon Bowie had eight each and Robert Donnell had six. Zach Basher (four points) and Xavier Harris (two points) rounded out the scoring.
The Hornets ran out to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They led 34-19 at the half.
The Hornets return to action tonight at home against Jacksonville. Ninth-grade action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with JV (6:30) and varsity (8 p.m.) to follow.
