Bears halt Malakoff win streak, 47-38

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Tigers saw their unbeaten season halted Tuesday night, falling 47-38 to the Brownsboro Bears in a non-district basketball contest at The Palace.

Brownsboro used the entire first quarter to overcome a 9-0 start by the Tigers and then ran off and hid. Coach Jeff Hutchins' Bears, who improved to 6-2 going into the annual Great East Texas Shootout Thursday-Saturday on their homecourt, turned to sharp-shooters Jacob McCarthy and Ryan Smith to reverse their early fortunes and take the fight out of the Tigers.

McCarthy and Smith combined for 16 points in the second quarter to enable the Bears to build a 26-19 halftime lead. McCarthy, often left unattended by the Tigers, drained a game-high 18 points — all on three-pointers. Smith had 10 points, including a pair of treys.

Once Malakoff, which started quickly on a pair of Bernard Hall three-pointers and another from Truman Dowell, lost its momentum, it was gone for good. The Tigers made a mini-run midway through the third quarter to pull within six, 31-25, but the Bears, who were scoreless for almost four minutes, closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to regain complete control.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-1 on the season going into tournament action Thursday in Emory at Rains High School. Coach DeArtis Nickerson's squad entered Tuesday's game fresh off a first-place finish in the Blooming Grove tournament.

Neither team’s overall performance was anything to write home about. The Bears simply seemed to play with more energy and intensity, often times leaving the Tigers appearing flat-footed.

Brownsboro turned the ball over 21 times. Malakoff had 19 turnovers.

Cory Phelps led the Malakoff scoring with 12 points. He scored eight late in the game.

Hall finished with nine points for the Tigers — all on three-pointers. Cornelius Richardson netted seven and Dowell six.

Zach Bailey and Nick Jones had six points each for the Bears.

The Bears were 8-of-20 from three-point range. Malakoff was 6-of-22.

In the JV game, Malakoff came away with a 53-44 win.
