AREA HOOPS ROUNDUP: Hornets fall at Van tourney

VAN — The Athens Hornets fell to 5-3 on the season with a 78-74 loss to Liberty-Eylau Saturday at the Van Invitational.

“It was a very fast-paced game,” Athens Head Coach Tracy Carter said. “(Liberty-Eylau) converted down the stretch.”

Jared Tilley had 19 to lead the Hornets. Kendall Sanders finished with 17, Desmond Bowie had 14, Xavier Harris netted nine and Zach Basher finished with five.

The Hornets return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. Sulphur Springs at the Wills Point tournament.

The junior varsity Hornets won the tournament championship in Kemp over the weekend, beating Palestine, 46-29. Anthony Taylor had 13, Terrance Behan scored seven, followed by Devin Johnson and Demarcus Mimms, who had six each.

The freshmen Hornets came away with the consolation title at the Kemp tournament with a 37-27 win over Scurry-Rosser. Carter Harraid and Jesse Durham had 10 points each in the win, and Tevin Davis pitched in six.

Rosehill Christian 51,

Eustace 48

SCURRY — The Eustace Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in the consolation championhip at the Scurry-Rosser tournament Saturday afternoon.

Guy Hargrove scored 13 points and was alter named to the All-Tournament team. John Bradburn also had 13 and Braden Strickland finished with nine.



Rockwall 59,

Mabank 53

MABANK — The Mabank Panthers’ undefeated run at their own Cedar Creek Lake Shootout ended Saturday with a loss to Rockwall.

Tyler Fisher scored 19 points to lead the Panthers in the losing effort. Griffin Marshall joined him in double figures with 13 points. He also had three three-pointers.



Girls

Longview 95,

Athens 47

WILLS POINT — The Longview Lady Lobos just had too much offensive firepower in a big win over the Athens Lady Hornets Friday at the Wills Point tournament.

Alex Furr was held to a season-low 32 points in the loss. She is averaging more than 40 points per game this season. Trekka Franklin had five points, followed by Nicole Graham (four), Amber Coby (three), Demi Cumby (two) and Chelsea Crayton (one).



Lindale 48,

Brownsboro 46

LINDALE — The Brownsboro Bearettes came up just a little bit short in a loss to the Lindale Lady Eagles in the championship game of the Hoop Heaven Tournament Saturday.

The Bearettes led after three quarters, but Lindale outscored them, 20-13, in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Hillary Shaffer had 16 points to lead Brownsboro. Tiffany Hurd pitched in nine and Yniqua Mosley had eight.



Kemp 49,

Rosehill Christian 40

SCURRY — The Kemp Lady Jackets improved to 8-1 on the season and grabbed third place in the Scurry-Rosser tournament with a win over Rosehill.

Michelle Ritterbach scored 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter in making the All-Tournament team, which also included teammate Brittany Simmons.
